Karl Fischer Microscope
Karl Fischer Moisture Samples are routinely screened for water using a “crackle test”. If a positive result is obtained, then the water content is accurately quantified by means of a Karl Fischer titration. Water is found in machines and engines as a consequence of leaking seals, condensation or because of an internal coolant leak. In conjunction with spectrometric analysis, the source of the water contamination can usually be established.
Kinematic Viscosity Viscosity is a measure of a liquids resistance to flow. By monitoring viscosity in lubricating oil, it is possible to detect conditions such as fuel dilution caused by incomplete combustion, overheating or cross contamination with the wrong grade of oil. Viscosity measurement is routinely carried out at 40C and 100C although some specialised applications may require the determination to be carried out at 60C.

Specific Gravity The specific gravity of a glycol-based coolant is a means to determine the effectiveness of its antifreeze properties. This, together with, quantification of its corrosion inhibitor concentration provides information on the coolants suitability for continued use.

Total Acid & Total Base Number TAN is a measure of both the weak and strong organic acids found in oil. As an oil ages in service, oxidation causes the oil to become progressively more acidic. If the oil becomes too acidic, the possibility of the oil attacking and corroding machine components arises and an oil change is normally recommended. TBN is a measure of the residual alkalinity of engine oil. During the combustion process, harmful acidic by-products are formed which if not neutralised will cause corrosion of components. Additives present in oil to neutralise this acidity eventually become depleted, at which point an oil change is required.
Trace Metal Analysis/Wear Check The spectrometric analysis of oil is a means of determining the concentration of plant wear metals present in oil, as a consequence of components wearing in service. With knowledge of the metallurgy of the plant from which the sample of oil has been extracted, a report on the condition of the components within the plant can be prepared enabling maintenance to be carried out before a component failure occurs.
