| Creep and Stress Rupture TestingExova's
Newcastle laboratory is the Group's main European provider of creep
testing and stress rupture testing. Other Exova European laboratories,
including Exova Plzen, Czech Republic, provide additional capacity and
expertise.
Creep Testing
The Newcastle laboratory has a purpose built creep testing
laboratory, of approximately 400m2 floor area, environmental
temperature control is to within +/-2 deg C. There are 88 dedicated
creep testing machines, with load capacity to 100kN, each test machine
is equipped with a state of the art digital temperature controller,
monitoring is by digital strain and temperature data acquisition
systems.
The facility is capable of testing from sub-zero to 1150 DegC, on
standard, non standard specimen designs, including tension/compression
creep of non-metallic materials.
Industry sectors: Aerospace, Power generation, Nuclear, Defence.
Stress Rupture
Overall capacity of 137 test points available for stress rupture,
capacity to 50 kN, with temperatures to 1150 DegC. The Newcastle
laboratory offers testing of miniature specimens to suit quality
assurance testing of gas turbine blade and airfoils, all test points
are digitally monitored for specimen temperature.
Industry sectors: Aerospace, power generation, chemical
Stress Rupture Testing in Controlled Environments
The facility comprises twelve dedicated test machines for stress
rupture each capable operating at up to 850 DegC and 20kN maximum load.
Both standard-miniature specimens can be tested in Oxygen free
atmospheres to enable life fraction analysis with original material
data to be performed. Each stress rupture test machine is capable of
testing up to three specimens in a test string.
Industry sector: Power generation
Stress Relaxation
Twenty stress relaxation test points are available for loads to
250kN, specimen types can be conventional designed, machined specimens,
or multi strand cable.
Industry sectors: Civil, Power generation, Nuclear
Whole Blade stress Rupture Testing
Testing of standard full section turbine blades, load application
by root and shroud, utilising specialised gripping systems. Test data
is analysed to ascertain any creep damage in the airfoil, and
subsequent remaining life.
Industry sector: Aerospace
Tensile Testing
The laboratory has six tensile testing frames available, with a
load capacity of up to 1000kN, four of the frames are equipped with
digital control and data capture systems, these systems are all
inter-changeable, both in software, hardware, to minimise any risks due
to system failures.
Tensile testing can be performed at temperatures from sub zero to
1150 deg C, using controlled thermal ramp rates if required. Test
specimen designs to suit the customers requirements are possible. The
laboratory specialise in non-standard and miniature tensiles, for very
small tensiles, and can offer Electron-Beam welding of end sections,
eliminates any HAZ damage to the gauge section.
Industry sectors: Aerospace, Chemical, Power generation, Nuclear

| | Experimental Stress Analysis | | Finite Element Analysis (FEA) Exova
have the capability to use the client FEA data for identifying hot
spots and design representative fatigue programmes from the data. This
reduces the requirement for full-scale function trials and hence
reduces both product lead time and development costs.
This kind of modelling is frequently used in transportation / aerospace / marine / defence and civil applications. | | Flexural Load | | Pipe Hoop Tensile Creep Overall

| | Post Failure Analysis using SEM | | Shear Load | | Specimen Manufacture Located
on the Newcastle site is our machining facility. This is equipped with
CNC lathes, milling machines and cylindrical grinder. A staff of
dedicated workshop engineers manufacture, both static and dynamic test
specimens. Typical materials are cast and forged superalloy, supplied
in component form, which requires expertise in sectioning and specimen
extraction, typical scope is from miniature stress rupture specimens
from ducted gas turbine blades, to complex forged turbine disc cut-ups.
GEAE approve the facility, with GEAE approval pending for low stress
grinding. | | Stress & Creep Rupture Stress Rupture Testing in Controlled Environments.
