Fatigue testing

Depending on the particular application the direction of loading can be along the axis of the material (Axial Fatigue), across the axis of the material i.e. bending fatigue, or around the circumference of the material i.e. rotational fatigue. Under certain circumstances where the material is twisted around its axis we encounter torsional fatigue.

Component Fatigue Most LCF and HCF fatigue tests are carried out on accurately pre-machined test pieces, however, there are circumstances where fatigue tests are required to be carried out on components or structures, quite often to specific wave forms commonly referred to as 'spectrum loading'. Exova have the ability to design, build and execute multi-axial or flexural fatigue tests on small structures.
Constant Displacement/ Load/ Strain High Cycle fatigue is carried out usually on resonance machines with typical frequencies between 50 and 100Hz. Below 50Hz high cycle fatigue is usually carried out on servo-hydraulic machines. Low cycle fatigue is only carried out using servo-hydraulic machines. The mode of control of the test loads is controlled using constant displacement or by controlling the applied load using load cell or by strain using extensometry.
Crack Propagation (da/dN) In practice it's difficult to envisage an engineering structure that does not have defects which could initiate a fatigue crack. Both fracture toughness and fatigue crack growth (da/dN) tests help to assess the effect of fatigue cracks in structures.

High and Low Cycle Tests Depending on the frequency, the tests are referred to as low cycle fatigue (LCF) <1Hz, or High Cycle Fatigue >1Hz.
