Fracture Toughness

In practice it's difficult to envisage an engineering structure that does not have defects which could initiate a fatigue crack. Both fracture toughness and fatigue crack growth (da/dN) tests help to assess the effect of fatigue cracks in structures.

Fracture toughness is an attempt to assess the effect of a notch on the basic strength of a material under a steadily increased load. This data is used to establish service or replacement intervals for highly stressed components under fatigue or rotating conditions.
