Tensile testing is carried out on a variety of test specimens from simple strips to accurately machined dumbbell shaped specimens. The specimens are gripped between fixed and moving cross-heads of a universal testing machine. As the grips are moved apart at a constant rate the specimen is stretched. The force on the specimen and its displacement is monitored continuously and used to derive a stress-strain plot from which data such as tensile strength (maximum tensile stress carried by the specimen), elongation and the tensile modulus (the slope of the initial linear region of the stress-strain curve) can be calculated.
