Density and Specific Gravity

What is Density and Specific Gravity?
Density is the mass of a material per unit volume and specific gravity is the ratio of density of a material at 23°C to the density of gas-free, distilled water at 23°C.

Exova’s Test Method for Determining Density:
Methods for determining density include simple measurements of mass and volume to more accurate methods such as water displacement measurements and the density column.
Simple Measurements: the mass of a specimen of material in air is determined and immerse in a liquid such as gas-free distilled water, then its apparent mass upon immersion is determined and its density and specific gravity calculated.

More Accurate: a small specimen of the test material is placed in a column of variable density liquid with standard floats (of known density). The density of the material is calculated based on its position in the column and the known densities of the standard floats.
