At Exova, accelerated ageing is used to aggravate conditions of heat, oxygen, sunlight, etc. in a controlled laboratory environment to speed up the normal ageing processes of materials. Accelerated ageing is useful to estimate the lifetime of products as well as compare the stabilisation performance of antioxidants and UV stabilisers. Typical accelerated ageing methods include:
- Thermal ageing in air ovens
- UV ageing in Xenon Arc weatherometer or QUV
- Gas fading from atmosphere containing oxides of nitrogen in gas fade chamber
- Multiple pass extrusion in single-screw extruder to simulate processing conditions
