Implementation of Replication Testing: Replication testing is a form of non destructive testing that establishes the cause and extent of damage caused by ageing mechanisms in metallic structures by the analysis of micrographs of grain structure. Replication testing is often implemented alongside primary NDT activities. Metallurgical microstructure replicas provide important defect assessment and remnant life data to engineers responsible for plant management.
Replication Testing: Surfaces Surfaces are prepared by abrasive preparation using successively finer grits, followed by a final diamond-impregnated cloth polish. The work is done with portable polishing equipment and small diameter grinding and polishing disks.
Replication Testing Observations: Observations for replication testing are made in the field and can also be made in a laboratory after the samples are transported. For field use, a portable 400X magnification microscope is used to observe prepared metal surfaces and the quality of the replica. A portable microscope with photographic capabilities can also be used to provide digital images of the examined areas.
Metallurgical replicas can be viewed in the laboratory using either optical or scanning electron microscopes.
