Own label liability lies with the retailer
New product development, change to supplier or changes to existing products results in over 2,000 new or modified product specifications and labels per annum. The validation of this information from the supplier and the check of the final label is carried out by Exova on behalf of the retailer own label brand.
New legislation, for example Allergens has increased the information required on the food label and it is essential to confirm the information provided from the supplier is correct. A change in supplier for one ingredient can introduce a potential allergen that is required to be declared on the label.
Incorrect food labeling now results in more product recalls than food safety.
Benefits
A labelling error that results in a product recall is damaging both in terms of actual costs, impact on reputation and loss of confidence by the consumer.
Since the introduction of this new process, where labels are checked by an external 3rd party, a number of benefits have been demonstrated by the client:
- Increase in on time delivery of artwork
- Reduction in delays on product launch
- Reduction in product recall due to labelling errors
- Greater consistency in labelling
- Greater adherence to corporate labelling guidance
- Release on in-house technical resource for new product development
