Legislation mandates periodic legionella testing to ensure water safety. |
Legionnaires was first recognised in July 1976, and there are currently over 50 recognised species, 20 of which are associated with the highly infectious disease in humans. Legionella is found in both open and closed water systems. Due to the nature of closed water systems and especially cooling towers, spas and swimming pools, there is an increased risk of a Legionella outbreak.
This has resulted in legionella testing legislation including The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) 2002. This legislation makes it a legal requirement to routinely conduct legionella testing. Exova's laboratories provide comprehensive legionella testing services, are members of the Legionella Control Association with full UKAS 17025 Accreditation, and comply with British Standard BS7592:2008.
