Engine Emissions Measurement

The Engine & Emissions Technology group at Exova conducts engine performance and durability programs, emissions development, calibration, exhaust aftertreatment, and certification projects for heavy, medium and light duty engines. Exova also performs production audit testing for engine OEMs in facilities located close to their engine plants. The engine group routinely conducts engine emissions tests to US & European standards. Furthermore, Exova has participated in several correlation programs with engine OEMs and the U.S. EMA (Engine Manufacturer’s Association). The engine tests are accredited to the ISO17025 requirements. Engine and emission tests are increasingly important considering today's environmental issues.

Capabilities include:
The Engine & Emissions Technology group has the capability to perform a wide variety of tests:

  • Engine development: performance, fuel systems, combustion, and emissions calibration
  • Emissions development: exhaust aftertreatment systems (DPF, LNT, SCR, etc.)
  • Emissions Certification to US and European standards
  • Engine durability and production audit testing

Our state-of-the-art engine and emissions facilities (AVL, Horiba), suitable for engine and emissions development to 2010 EPA standards, include:

  • Four (4) Transient Emissions Certification test cells with maximum horsepower and torque capacity of 750 hp and 2,500 ft-lb respectively
  • Seven (7) Development & Durability test cells, some with emissions capability
  • Full-flow dilution tunnels: standard 18” and 10”
  • Combustion air systems: variable dew point & temperature
  • Dilution air systems: HEPA filtered, low humidity & temperature controlled
  • Real-time emissions measurements of HC, CO, NOx, NO2and CO2
  • Particulate benches for low PM engines
  • Five (5) point raw emissions measurement, plus AVL smoke meters
  • Two (2) high-speed AVL FTIRs for exhaust aftertreatment systems development
  • High speed in-cylinder combustion analysis system (CAS)
  • Total particulate analyses including SOF, fuel/lube contribution, sulphates, PAH, nitro-PAH
  • In addition, we have extensive physical characterization and chemical analyses capabilities

Exova has been servicing the OEMs and Tier 1 & 2 Exhaust Suppliers since 1995. The testing performed typically involves Components, Subsystems, and Full Exhaust Systems. Everything from exhaust flanges, simple and complex tubing geometry, catalytic converters, resonators, mufflers, Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) and flex couplings can be cycled employing low frequency simple sinusoidal inputs out to 50 Hz. The applied inputs can be configured utilizing a single or multiple hydraulic actuator configuration for uni-axial or multi-axial inputs.

For higher frequency applications, Electro-dynamic (ED) shakers with slip tables that allow three axis testing one axis at a time are employed. Typical inputs include sinusoids, sine on sine, random, saw-tooth, and shaped white noise (PSD) out to 2000 Hz. If field correlation is required, real-time phase related inputs out to 50 Hz. can be developed using acquired field data.

In conjunction with the mechanical inputs simulated exhaust temperatures and extreme field conditions such as cold water spray/quench and contaminants can be integrated into the test configuration.
