Reaction to Fire Testing

Reaction to Fire Testing
ISO 5660 - Cone calorimeter used to assess
burning behaviour, heat release and smoke
density.

Reaction to Fire Tests are used to assess the behaviour of materials and products whilst a fire is developing. The properties which are evaluated during the reaction to fire tests include:

  • Ignitability
  • Flammability
  • Heat Release
  • Smoke and Toxic Fume Production

The aim of a reaction to fire test is to ensure that occupants are able to escape from a fire. They are a mandatory requirement in most building regulations and transport sector specifications.

Our test reports will enable your product to be installed in your target application. For Building Regulations, it is common to be asked for testing in accordance with the European classification system EN 13501, though testing may also be required in accordance with the national standards (BS 476, DIN 4102, NFP 92-50x etc). Currently national standards are used for European Rolling Stock (BS 6853, LUL 1085, NFF 16-101/102 etc), however, we are also able to offer testing in accordance with the prCEN/TS 45545-2 specifcation which details the tests which are anticipated to be required across Europe in the future.

As an approved laboratory and notified body for marine testing and certification, we conduct many tests to Annex 1 Parts 1 to 9. Other sectors requiring testing are the aviation, automotive and defence areas, and all of these tests are offered at our accredited laboratories. A number of products require specific testing, such as cables, textiles, furniture and accessories and we can advise clients which tests are required for their specific circumstance.

Our experts are also experienced at devising Ad Hoc test procedures to cover the clients specific needs.
