Occupational Hygiene and Local Exhaust Ventilation Testing

Occupational Hygiene

The aim of occupational hygiene is to identify risks and implement controls and monitoring to ensure the safety of workers. This can be chemical hazards, airborne material or noise.

Duties under The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (2002) COSSH, require employers to assess the risks to employees from exposure to substances hazardous to health, and to monitor exposure at the workplace where required.
  • COSHH - safe use of chemicals and other hazardous materials
  • Local Exhaust Ventilation Testing
  • Workplace Exposure Monitoring
  • Noise and Vibration Assessment

Monitoring can be carried out using a wide range of methods for almost all workplace pollutants including:
  • Dusts
  • Metal Particles
  • Fumes
  • Vapours
  • Noise
  • Gases
  • Volatile Organic Solvents
  • Microbiological
  • Asbestos Fibres

There can be positive benefits to your business from monitoring the work place:
  • Better staff morale
  • Improved understanding and compliance with health and safety requirements
  • Reduced risk to your staff and your business.
  • Increased productivity

Local Exhaust Ventilation Testing

The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH) require the regular testing of any local exhaust ventilation system used to control exposure of employees to hazardous substances to verify that they are in an efficient working order and good repair. Exova can provide advice and guidance prior to the design and installation of ventilation systems and can carry out statutory examinations.

These Examinations include:

  • Mechanical Inspection
  • Schematic drawing of system

  • Measurement of face and capture velocities

  • Static pressure behind each hood or extraction point

  • Transport velocities and volume through duct

  • Static pressure across filters and fans
  • Discharge arrangements

  • Assessment of operating parameters

  • Recommendations on any shortcomings or defects
A test report for each system will be issued following each examination detailing results and the ability of the equipment to provide satisfactory control.
