Exova meeting new, more exacting standards

The transport sector is an increasingly competitive market place. Through economic challenges, continually improving products and increasing legislation, Exova supports this vital industrial sector with material testing, engine development, structural dynamic testing and fire safety technology.

In North America, engine emissions legislation stimulates a high level of activity in the engine development arena and Exova continues to support the industry in meeting new, more exacting standards. Also present is increased activity in the full scale structural dynamic testing of buses and rail track testing aligned to the move towards public transport adopted by many municipalities.

In Europe, the focus has been towards municipal transportation, with increased legislation for fire safety in rail and bus transportation.

The marine market continues to develop safer materials which will endure harsh conditions but also meet environmental demands for protective coatings with lower volatile organic compounds.  In addition to testing which includes their resistance against scratching, impact and water, salt spray testing, hardness and drying time, our consultants provide advice on surface treatment and material degradation.

Exova developed ultrasonic testing as an alternative

This customer in the rail sector was already using the Eddy Current (ET) method for inspecting cracks in switchblades on railway tracks. It was proving difficult to get access to the area to be inspected with this chosen test method and equipment.

Exova developed an alternative testing technique for use in the field, based on ultrasonic testing (UT) using surface wave techniques. In addition, Exova developed a special training programme for customer staff to be able to inspect all switchblades by surface wave technology (NDT) in the field.
